Bishop James J. Hogan of Altoona-Johnstown,
IRL Founder and President, Dies at 93
Retired
Bishop James J. Hogan of Altoona-Johnstown died June 14 at the age
of 93. The sixth bishop of the Diocese, James John Hogan was born
in Philadelphia on Oct. 17, 1911. As a young boy, he
moved with his family to Camden, N.J. Following his
education at Camden Catholic High School, he attended
St. Charles College in Catonsville, Md.; St. Mary's
Seminary in Baltimore; and North American College in
Rome. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Trenton,
N.J., on Dec. 8, 1937, at North American College. On
November 27, 1959, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop
of the Diocese of Trenton. Bishop Hogan was appointed
to head the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, PA and was
officially installed as the Bishop on July 6, 1966.
In
1974, Bishop Hogan helped found the Institute on Religious
Life, and served as its President from 1974-1980 and 1987-92. His Excellency
received the 1992 Pro Fidelitate et Virtute award in recognition
for his deep commitment to the vowed religious life.
